Don't Let Negativity Ruin Your 2016

I've learned from experience that who you associate with is who you become. If you want to kick a bad habit, and your five closest friends are still doing it, it can become extremely difficult for you to change what you're doing. This is as true of social media connections as it is of offline friendships. That's why it's not just about who's following you. It's not just about who people will associate with you, either. In 2016, an excellent social media selling or marketing strategy is built on positive connections, and you may want to beware a social media connection who consistently exhibits the following warning signs.

Constantly Blaming Others For Their Obstacles Instead of Taking Action.

While other people can cause inconveniences, the positive response is to look in the mirror and take stock of what you can control: take ownership of the situation and do something. Negative social media connections are more absorbed with laying blame for problems than with doing something positive about the situation, and that negativity could infect whatever you're trying to do with your social selling or social marketing.

Frequently Obsessing Over Others' Negativity.

Negative social media connections often find each other, and get caught up in arguments and drama. They look for the newest negative drama to talk about, whether it's between celebrities or just people in their network, and they support each other in their negativity. Unless you're aiming to be more negative (and who would?), this is not the support network you need as you build a social media brand.

Constantly Tearing Down What You Share.

It's easier to tear down than to build up, and negative social media connections frequently look for the opportunity. They aren't there to support what you're doing or to share in a constructive discussion about a given topic, they often want to find something wrong and feel clever about doing it.

What do you do about this? The answer must be positive. Think of connecting with people who are already succeeding at goals similar to your own. It's about who gets more of your time, not who gets less. Focus on connecting with positive, goal-oriented people who are where you would like to be, and you'll see less and less from potentially negative social media connections over time.
