We all get hundreds of electronic messages per day, yet you can often count the number of phone calls on one hand. What would you rather compete with, hundreds of electronic messages, or a few phone calls? We are overly reliant on online communication, but it has its uses. For example, we usually send contracts by email, and it's easier than the fax machines we used to have to mess with more often. Here are some simple ways to make online communication work for you.

This free website will connect with your Gmail and send you a pop-up notification when someone opens your email. When connected with Hubspot, you can also track what page of your website that a lead is looking at. The best time to follow up with a lead is when they're looking at your website, or your information.

Be careful!

The last thing you want to do is freak out a client or lead, so don't call them saying something like, "I see you're looking at my website right now." Rather, embrace the magic that is the apparent coincidence, make the call as you would any other follow up call, and let them say, "Oh, I was just looking at your website right now. What a coincidence."

But what if they haven't opened my email?

There could be a couple of issues. One could be that they're not interested, but another possibility to consider is the problem of spam filters. 30% of your emails will end up spam filtered by the ISP or by the email provider. Consider sending messages through social media, because Facebook and LinkedIn don't have the same spam filters. Granted, not everybody responds to social media messages.

At the end of the day, phone calls are still direct, personal, and essential. We do, however, live in a world of online communication, and it's important to make the smartest use of what's available.
